Approximately £86,000 worth of safety bollards are slated for installation in Leeds City Square. This initiative aims to enhance pedestrian safety and support public events. Leeds City Council has indicated that government funding will cover the cost of these fixed bollards, which will span an 82ft (25m) section on the eastern side of the prominent square. This follows the completion in May of a £3.5m project that pedestrianised City Square, incorporating adjacent cycle paths and bus lanes. A council report noted that the scheme is expected to “contribute to the protection of members of the public using City Square all year round”. The report characterized City Square as “a key gateway”, frequently serving as visitors’ initial impression upon their arrival in Leeds. It further stated: “It is an important piece of city centre public realm which is enjoyed by residents, workers and visitors to the city.” According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the report specified that funding for the project, up to £86,000, will be sourced from the government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund. The report also added: “It will be delivered at no cost to Leeds City Council other than in city centre management staff time in progressing the scheme to the point of delivery.”
