A petition has been launched, calling on the government to honor its pledge of cultural development funding for a local theatre. Specifically, The Lighthouse Theatre in Kettering, Northamptonshire, was slated to receive part of a £5m funding package promised to North Northamptonshire Council by the Conservative government; however, these funds will now not be disbursed. A spokesperson for the Labour Party commented that the government was compelled “to make some tough choices to stabilise our economy”. Mike Balderson, an employee at the Kettering Conference Centre, where the theatre is located, stated: “This funding is essential to support the long-term economic sustainability of the theatre.” Mr. Balderson, the initiator of the petition, expressed that the withdrawal of financial support would be “devastating both culturally and economically” for the theatre. He and his fellow petitioners have urged the government to re-evaluate its decision and fulfill the funding commitment made to the Lighthouse Theatre, thereby seeking to “protect the cultural and community benefits it provides”. Jason Smithers, a Conservative councillor and the leader of North Northamptonshire Council, indicated his intention to “make the strongest case possible” and would additionally “urge” the government to reconsider its decision to withdraw the funding. A representative from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities responded by stating: “This government inherited £22bn of unfunded spending commitments, and we have therefore been forced to make the difficult decision to review these previously announced projects.”
