New parking bays on a primary shopping thoroughfare in Goole have been labeled “a joke” by local business owners, who assert they were painted “too narrow”. These parking spaces, located on Pasture Road, measure 5.5ft (1.7m) in width, which is less than the 6.5ft (2m) width specified by East Riding of Yorkshire Council. The council, having invested £265,000 in the resurfacing and repainting project, announced that corrective work to address the issue is scheduled for 27 November. A number of local traders reported that the dimensions of the bays have negatively impacted their operations and voiced apprehension that the rectification work might disrupt the crucial Christmas shopping season. According to the council, an investigation into the dimensions of the spaces revealed they were “slightly short of the guide width”. A statement from the council further advised, “Drivers can park as normal and no parking fines will be issued in the meantime.” Russ Jackson, proprietor of Creation Clothing, characterized the situation as a “massive fail”. He commented, “It’s a joke really. Somebody’s come out with the measurements that they needed and they’ve fallen short.” Jackson added, “I wouldn’t think closing the road again, especially when we’re coming up to Christmas, is good for any business down here.” Natalie Harman, owner of the beauty salon Spoilt Rotten, stated that operating a business in the locality was “already hard”. She elaborated, “It’s been tricky because our customers have been struggling to get in for their appointments. It means we are then running behind in the salon.” Nick Coultish, the councillor representing Goole North, acknowledged “residents’ frustration” and indicated that the council had informed him “the contractor made an error”. He advised, “Just park in the normal way that you would, sensibly and respectfully.” The council verified that the necessary remedial work would necessitate a road closure.
