The Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service (GFRS), a county-level organization, has initiated a recruitment drive for full-time personnel. The service aims to integrate a minimum of 20 new firefighters into its operational teams. Chief Fire Officer Mark Preece characterized the role of a firefighter as a “rewarding and fulfilling role,” extending an invitation for applications from individuals across all backgrounds. GFRS stipulated that prospective candidates must be at least 18 years old, possess a satisfactory level of physical fitness, and reside within a 50-mile radius of the Gloucestershire border. An assessment published earlier this year indicated that the service needed to “do more” regarding fire safety, having been rated as inadequate or requiring improvement in nine out of 11 evaluated areas. GFRS affirmed its ongoing efforts to enhance performance in these specific areas, anticipating that the incoming recruits would contribute to its advancement. Dave Norman, the Gloucestershire County Council cabinet member with oversight of the service, stated, “The recruitment of more firefighters will help us to continue our improvement journey.” He further remarked, “As a former firefighter myself, I know that being involved in the fire and rescue service can give a great sense of pride, knowing you are making a difference in your community.” The application window will remain open until 18 November.
