A local bakery has achieved widespread online recognition for its unique rendition of the nativity scene, crafted entirely from bread. Hobbs House Bakery, situated in Nailsworth, Gloucestershire, utilized sourdough loaves to represent the three kings, Mary, and Joseph. The figure of baby Jesus was fashioned from a baguette, placed within a manger made from a rye loaf. According to Anna Herbert of the bakery, the display, which they have named “Breadlehem,” has been varnished to ensure its preservation through the Christmas season. Ms. Herbert stated, “People seem to be loving it, so it’s been fantastic to see a lot of great comments and involvement from the community.” Ms. Herbert attributed the scene’s popularity to a public desire for “something quite light-hearted and fun.” She further remarked, “It seems that people are into Christmas quite early, we’ve sold a lot of mince pies already.” Speaking to BBC Radio Gloucestershire, she added, “The way they’re made from a stubby, rounded loaf… they’re definitely friendly-looking.” A picture of the installation has circulated widely on social media platforms, garnering thousands of shares. Admirers have described the Christmas tableau as “very appropriate,” noting that the name Bethlehem signifies “house of bread.” Ms. Herbert commented, “It’s a little bit of an artform,” adding, “It’s not as simple as it looks.” For updates from BBC Gloucestershire, connect with us on Facebook, X, and Instagram.
