European Rugby Challenge Cup Gloucester (7) 15 Tries: Blake, Tuisue Cons: Carreras Pens: Carreras Edinburgh (7) 10 Tries: Goosen Cons: Thompson Pens: Healy Gloucester commenced their European Challenge Cup season with a hard-fought 15-10 win over Edinburgh, played under challenging circumstances at Kingsholm. Seb Blake secured Gloucester’s initial points by driving over from a maul, establishing a lead amidst difficult swirling wind and rain. Wes Goosen then equalized for Edinburgh with a try just prior to halftime. Santiago Carreras extended the Cherry and Whites’ advantage with a penalty kick, followed by Albert Tuisue’s second try for Gloucester. During this period, a constrained Edinburgh side saw two of its players sent to the sin-bin. Ben Healy’s penalty kick in the final moments proved insufficient for the Scottish team to overcome Gloucester’s defensive stand. However, it did secure a losing bonus point for Edinburgh from the encounter. Gloucester, who have won the Challenge Cup twice, previously faced Edinburgh in the group stages of this tournament last season. That match was also a tight contest, with Gloucester winning by a single point before advancing to the final, where they were defeated by the Sharks. As Storm Darragh approached, rainfall commenced almost precisely at kick-off, swirling vigorously under the stadium lights. An arduous opening phase was anticipated due to the weather conditions. Gloucester adapted more effectively, opting for a kick to the corner after securing their second scrum, leading to their first score after 11 minutes when hooker Blake touched down following a maul driven over in the right-hand corner. Gloucester maintained dominance at the breakdown and pressed forward; however, despite their possession, they were unable to add further points. Meanwhile, Edinburgh’s debutant, Freddy Douglas, sustained an early injury. Val Rapava-Ruskin executed a significant carry for Gloucester, but possession was lost. Although Gloucester counter-attacked, the home side soon found themselves defending when centre Matt Currie breached their defense, only for Gareth Anscombe to make a try-saving interception during a two-on-one situation. Mistakes began to emerge as the weather conditions deteriorated. Currie fumbled a high ball, nearly presenting Josh Hathaway with a try. Subsequently, Gloucester experienced their own reprieve when a grubber kick deflected off an Edinburgh player’s leg, bouncing in the opposite direction into a wide-open area. Goosen responded with the most speed, chasing his own kick forward, and dived at the five-metre line, narrowly missing a score. Gloucester has now defeated Edinburgh in the group stage of the Challenge Cup for two consecutive years. Goosen redeemed himself moments before halftime, finally putting Edinburgh on the scoreboard by evading a tackle from Carreras to score after the ball was distributed wide from a line-out. Carreras’ penalty kick advanced Gloucester’s lead as they maintained superiority during the initial stages of the second half, despite difficulties in converting their advantage into points. Winger Christian Wade narrowly missed scoring from his own chip kick in the corner. Gloucester appeared to have scored again when Edinburgh flanker Tom Dodd received a yellow card for illegally collapsing a maul, but a prolonged TMO review determined they were held up over the try line. Edinburgh’s mistakes persisted, with Marshall Sykes subsequently sent to the sin-bin for a head collision involving Anscombe. Following this, Gloucester scored their second try as their forwards powered over the line, allowing Tuisue to touch down. Gloucester’s defensive efforts repelled a late surge from Edinburgh within the last 10 minutes. Ben Healy’s penalty, taken with the final kick of the game, reduced the score difference to five points.
