A global entertainment company, Trafalgar Entertainment, will take over the management of three Eastbourne theatres, which have been characterized as “jewels in the crown of south-east entertainment.” This arrangement stems from a partnership formed between Trafalgar Entertainment and Eastbourne Borough Council, encompassing the operation of the town’s Congress Theatre, Devonshire Park Theatre, and the Winter Garden, alongside the conferencing and exhibition facilities located within the Devonshire Quarter Complex. Stephen Holt, the leader of the council, stated that the company possesses “a superb track record.” He further commented, “The deal achieves key operational and financial objectives and ensures these jewels in the crown… will continue to delight audiences for years to come.” Trafalgar Entertainment, for its part, affirmed its commitment to “protect these wonderful venues.” Conversely, opposition leader Robert Smart requested “complete transparency” regarding the agreement, though he acknowledged that the company “could bring much-needed expertise.” Mr. Smart articulated, “Eastbourne residents deserve complete transparency about how this deal will allow the Council to pay back the over £60 million borrowed for the recent redevelopment carried out at the Devonshire Quarter Complex.” He also remarked, “The administration has been remarkably silent on the financial details of this arrangement.” Trafalgar Entertainment, established in 2017 by Sir Howard Panter and Dame Rosemary Squire, expressed that they were “delighted” to collaborate with the council. They further stated their belief that they “passionately believe that local audiences outside London deserve the very best.” They added that “Through Trafalgar’s unique model, Eastbourne audiences are assured that the best shows and events will be brought to Eastbourne alongside major new productions premiering here.”
