On Christmas Eve, a global bell-ringing initiative will take place to commemorate children who have passed away. Joseph Yeandle, who was three years old, succumbed to stage four neuroblastoma on 27 December 2021. The previous year, residents of Brynamman, Carmarthenshire, gathered to ring bells in Joseph’s honor. This year, according to his aunt Emma Rees, individuals will participate in bell ringing across the United Kingdom and in locations as distant as the Netherlands, Texas, and Australia, dedicating the act to “all children in heaven.” Following Joseph’s death, his family founded Joseph’s Smile, a charity aimed at assisting other children battling cancer. Ms. Rees informed BBC Wales Breakfast on Monday that the inspiration for the bell-ringing event stemmed from “something incredible” that occurred on Christmas Eve the year subsequent to his passing. An initial plan to ring a bell on a train, which Joseph cherished, could not proceed due to a malfunction. Nevertheless, the Brynamman community gathered at midday, bringing “hundreds” of bells. “They rang them for Joseph,” she stated. She added, “Kate (Joseph’s mum) and I turned to each other and said this has to happen every year and this has to happen for every child in heaven.” Ms. Rees described the experience of hearing the bells as “something else,” noting that it “brings so much hope and comfort” to families in mourning. She emphasized, “It’s important we keep saying their names,” explaining that “A parent’s greatest fear after losing their child is that they’re forgotten.” Her message to other grieving families offered solace: “You’re not alone, it’s a really difficult time.” She continued, “If you need to shut the door on Christmas that’s OK, but equally it’s OK to enjoy and miss them at the same time. Laugh when you can, cry when you need to.” She concluded with the sentiment, “Grief is the price we pay for love.”
