Jay Donnelly has been issued a two-match suspension for a provocative gesture made during the most recent ‘Big Two’ encounter between Glentoran and Linfield on 3 December, a game Glentoran won 1-0 in the BetMcLean Cup. Consequently, Donnelly will be unavailable for Glentoran’s derby against Linfield scheduled for Boxing Day. He is also set to miss Saturday’s fixture against Cliftonville at Solitude. The suspension for the striker commenced on 16 December. This meant he was initially slated to miss the BetMcLean Cup quarter-final against Ballymena United on Tuesday night; however, due to that match’s postponement, he will instead be absent from the 26 December game at the Oval. Furthermore, Glentoran, also known as the Glens, received a fine of £250 concerning the same incident that occurred during their 1-0 BetMcLean Cup last-16 win against the Blues at Windsor Park. Donnelly’s penalty was issued under Section 17.1 of the Irish Football Association’s Disciplinary Code, which states: “A player or official who provokes the general public during a match will be sanctioned with a minimum 2 match standard suspension and a minimum fine of £250 which will be imposed on their club.” Separately, Linfield incurred a £1,000 fine for violating Article 28.2 (a) regarding spectator misconduct during the same match. Additionally, a distinct notice of complaint was filed concerning the article that forbids “the invasion or attempted invasion of the field of play” during the 3 December match against Glentoran, resulting in a warning for that particular occurrence. Glentoran also received a £250 fine after the ‘Big Two’ derby held on Friday 22 November at the Oval, due to the deployment of flares or fireworks.
