The Leeds council has announced that nearly 70% of glass discarded in the city is now recycled, a direct result of the recently implemented kerbside collection service. As of 1 August, residents gained the ability to place glass items into their designated household green bins. A council spokesperson confirmed that this collected glass undergoes recycling in Yorkshire, where it is melted down to produce new bottles and jars, thereby preventing the emission of more than 100 tonnes of carbon every month. Councillor Mohammed Rafique, the executive member responsible for climate, energy, environment, and green space, advised residents to verify their bin collection schedules during the upcoming Christmas season. During October, almost 900 tonnes of glass was gathered and recycled via the green bins, which is comparable to 2 million wine bottles or 5.5 million beer bottles. A spokesperson for the council stated that 68% of the glass within the city is now being recycled. They further encouraged residents to “make an extra effort” during the festive period to guarantee that glass is recycled instead of being disposed of in the black general waste bin.
