Assistant coach Nigel Carolan stated his conviction that the Glasgow Warriors have moved past their “underdog” status in anticipation of their Champions Cup fixture against Toulon. The Warriors commenced their tournament run with a bonus-point win over Sale Sharks on Saturday. Carolan expressed his desire that the manner of their recent triumph would leave Glasgow supporters “flabbergasted by how ambitions we are”. The 49-year-old coach remarked, preceding Sunday’s encounter with Toulon, that “We talked a good game and it was important for us to back that up with a performance.” He further commented on the upcoming game, stating, “If we can bring some of that panache to Toulon on Sunday, I think it’s a true reflection of how we want to try and play the game. I think that’s where most questions will be answered.” Carolan reiterated his hope that the Saturday victory had impressed many fans, leaving them “flabbergasted by how ambitions we are, how brave we are and how accurate we can be.” He noted the team’s elevated expectations, acknowledging their exit in the last 16 last year. However, he added that subsequently winning the URC had significantly bolstered confidence within the squad. Carolan concluded by observing, “We’ve been regarded as the underdog, but we’ve proven now we can beat anybody. We don’t see ourselves as the underdog anymore and I think that has flipped on its head.”
