Children attending a Glasgow nursery assisted law enforcement in the “arrest” of the Grinch, an event orchestrated to alleviate distress caused by a recent break-in. On December 8, an intruder shattered a glass door at Ivy in the Park nursery, located in the city’s Carntyne area, and absconded with an iPad. Despite the nursery workers’ efforts to clean up the damage, the presence of boarded-up windows prompted inquiries from the children regarding the incident. Consequently, staff members collaborated with local police officers to devise a plan: the nursery caretaker would impersonate Dr. Seuss’s renowned Christmas-hating character, allowing the children to participate in his capture. Annefrances McGrath, the nursery operations director, stated: “We came up with the story that the Grinch had visited the nursery and been really naughty, and smashed some glass.” She added, “Then it grew arms and legs from there.” Outfitted in hi-vis vests and police hats, the nursery children were informed that the Grinch, discovered lurking in their nursery garden, was attempting to flee with a bag of chocolate. Utilizing a large net, they helped community police officer Declan McInnes apprehend the suspect. Subsequently, they escorted the Grinch to a waiting police van before securing him inside. The children then retrieved the Grinch’s bag, which contained chocolate donated by the police. The staged apprehension was recorded by the nursery’s CCTV cameras. Ms. McGrath mentioned that PC McInnes is scheduled to return in the New Year to provide the children with an update on the Grinch’s status after being incarcerated. She further explained that the Grinch’s “arrest” served to empower the children and provide them with “reassurance” that their nursery had become a safe environment once more, prior to the Christmas holidays.
