Multiple thoroughfares in central Glasgow have been cordoned off following the collapse of stonework from a structure deemed unsafe. Glasgow City Council reported that the material landed on the pavement of Queen Street around 03:00 on Friday. This bustling retail street was subsequently closed to vehicles at 08:00, and a crane was brought in to access the building’s roof. Sections of Argyle Street, Union Street, Ingram Street, Mitchell Street, and Mitchell Lane, all located within the city centre, were also made inaccessible. The dislodged material is believed to have originated from the baluster section of a stone railing situated on the roof. Glasgow City Council indicated that operations were ongoing to “ensure public safety” on the street. A spokesperson stated: “Our building standards officers have deployed a crane to support the removal of any further loose stonework from the roof. “Queen Street is currently closed to traffic to accommodate the crane and drivers are advised to seek an alternative route at this time.””
