An appeal for witnesses has been issued by a local council following the “mindless and disrespectful” vandalism of a large poppy. This poppy, along with several others, had been placed on the Eastleigh bandstand in Leigh Road as a tribute for Remembrance Day 2024. Eastleigh Borough Council suspects the damage occurred either on Saturday or Sunday. A spokesperson for the council described the event as a “great shame” for the community and confirmed that all of the giant poppies have since been taken down. The installation of giant poppies, sourced from the Royal British Legion, was initiated by the council in 2020. This initiative served as a demonstration of support during the Covid-19 pandemic. The spokesperson stated: “This is a mindless and hugely disrespectful act of vandalism and a great shame for the local community, the Royal British Legion and everyone involved in Remembrance and Armistice 2024.” The council urged anyone possessing information regarding the damage to report it.
