In Blandford, Dorset, a familiar sight for those purchasing remembrance poppies is the grandfather-granddaughter team of Army veteran Terry Clarkson and his 10-year-old granddaughter, Olivia. Mr. Clarkson has dedicated three decades to selling poppies, with Olivia joining him in recent years. Together, they have generated thousands of pounds for the Royal British Legion (RBL) through poppy sales and additional fundraising initiatives. Last year, Olivia contributed £700 through a sponsored swim and has also participated in various poppy appeal launch events across the county. During an interview with BBC Radio Solent, Olivia stated: “I’ve been at the opening of the appeal at the Tank Museum last month, and the opening in Blandford, and for both of those I read a poem.” She also mentioned another occasion, D-Day 80, where “there were stalls at the Legion Club in Blandford and they were all for the Poppy Appeal.” Mr. Clarkson commented: “I think with Olivia and with a lot of children – many youngsters are aware of conflict around the world simply because now we have mobile phones, video cameras.” He emphasized the importance of “being honest with young people about why it’s happening and what might be wrong about what’s happening.” He further added that “People of Olivia’s generation are the future of the Royal British Legion and other military charities. If there is no understanding then support for the poppy appeal will fade away.” Mr. Clarkson, who served in the 1970s, explained that his awareness of the RBL’s mission grew after his military service, leading him to feel he “needed to step up and support our armed forces family.” Olivia has been participating in these efforts since her toddler years. Commemorative services are scheduled throughout the county for Remembrance Sunday and on Monday, which is Armistice Day. Mr. Clarkson, who also serves as the RBL branch chairman for Blandford, stated: “I will be quite busy on Sunday but in my thoughts I will be recalling colleagues, comrades, who are not here any more.” For more updates, BBC Dorset can be followed on Facebook, X, or Instagram.
