Gemirande clinched the December Gold Cup at Cheltenham, narrowly defeating the favourite, Madara. The leading duo separated themselves from the rest of the competitors as they approached the second-to-last obstacle, making brief contact during the jump. They remained neck and neck at the final fence before the 11-2 contender, piloted by Charlie Deutsch and conditioned by Venetia Williams, gained a slight advantage over the 11-4 favourite, maintaining its lead to finish a length ahead. Madara, with Harry Skelton in the saddle and trained by his brother Dan, finished significantly ahead of Fugitif (6-1), who secured third place and was the winner of the previous year’s event. The eight-year-old Gemirande, who had previously achieved an impressive win at Ascot, maintained a strong position throughout the race. Jockey Deutsch expressed his satisfaction at securing another major race win with the horse. “His jumping was electric and I’m chuffed for him to get his head in front. He loves racing,” he told ITV Racing. “He’s a real character – the more you pull the faster he goes but he is really game.” “Venetia is a magician with what she does with her horses.”
