The Christmas display in a man’s front garden, which began with a 10ft (3m) Ferris wheel built after his wife was diagnosed with cancer, has been further expanded. Martin Pyke stated that he “lost himself and devoted a lot of time outside in the garage” following his wife Allison’s diagnosis with stage three breast cancer in December 2021. Since that time, he has consistently enlarged the festive arrangement outside their residence in Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex. Through their yearly displays, the couple has generated thousands of pounds for Macmillan Cancer Support, an organization that provided assistance to Mrs. Pyke, who is currently in remission. The front garden currently features 16 interactive elements, such as a teddy bear ski lift and a magic toy box, which Mr. Pyke began constructing in January of this year. He mentioned drawing inspiration from the United States, where Christmas celebrations are “much bigger.” The 65-year-old commented, “My neighbours probably think I’m somewhat mad every year when I’m out there digging holes in the front garden to bury aluminium tubes and bits and pieces to support everything.” Mrs. Pyke, aged 63, stated that she “didn’t believe I’d have another Christmas” following her diagnosis and remembers experiencing intense emotions during Christmas 2022. The grandmother-of-three recounted, “I can remember on Christmas Day just sobbing thinking ‘we’ve got to this point’.” “It was like being given another new life,” she added. Mrs. Pyke recently marked two years in remission from her cancer. Information regarding Essex news is available on BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram, and X. This content is copyrighted by BBC 2024.
