Galway midfielder Paul Conroy has been named the GAA’s Footballer of the Year, becoming the first player from Galway to receive this accolade since 2001. Conroy secured the football prize ahead of his teammate John Maher and Armagh’s All-Ireland winner Barry McCambridge. Concurrently, Clare forward Shane O’Donnell has been awarded the Hurler of the Year. This marks the third instance a Galway player has claimed the GAA’s most prestigious individual football award, with previous winners being Jarlath Fallon in 1998 and Declan Meehan in 2001. Conroy’s recognition follows the confirmation on Thursday that he was among five All-Star recipients from the All-Ireland runners-up. The Young Footballer of the Year title was awarded to Armagh’s All-Ireland winner Oisin Conaty, who was chosen over Galway’s Johnny McGrath and Donegal’s Ciaran Moore. O’Donnell’s achievement, meanwhile, makes him the fourth Clare player to earn the hurling title, following Brian Lohan (1995), Jamesie O’Connor (1997), and Tony Kelly (2013). As a full-forward, O’Donnell was a standout performer for the Banner County as they clinched the All-Ireland Hurling title for the first time since 2013, narrowly defeating Cork in an epic final. O’Donnell’s victory came against Cork midfielder Darragh Fitzgibbon and Limerick defender Kyle Hayes, making him the first non-Limerick player to win the award since Tipperary’s Seamus Callanan in 2019. His teammate Adam Hogan also collected the Young Hurler of the Year award, surpassing Cork’s Eoin Downey and Limerick’s Cathal O’Neill. Both O’Donnell and Hogan are among six Clare players selected for the Hurling All-Star team of the season. The losing finalists, Cork, contributed five players to the team, while Limerick secured four All-Star positions. The full Hurling All-Star team consists of: Nickie Quaid (Limerick); Adam Hogan (Clare), Eoin Downey (Cork), Dan Morrissey (Limerick); David McInerney (Clare), Robert Downey (Cork), Kyle Hayes (Limerick); Tony Kelly (Clare), Darragh Fitzgibbon (Cork); David Fitzgerald (Clare), Shane Barrett (Cork), Seamus Harnedy (Cork); Gearoid Hegarty (Limerick), Shane O’Donnell (Clare), Mark Rodgers (Clare).
