The revitalization of a town center is set to proceed following the Chancellor’s confirmation of the required funding for the project. Durham County Council is still slated to receive £20 million for investment in Spennymoor, an allocation initially pledged via the former government’s Long-term Plan for Towns fund. During Wednesday’s Budget announcement, Labour Chancellor Rachel Reeves declared that the initiative would persist, though it would be “reformed into a new regeneration programme”. Councillor Elizabeth Scott expressed satisfaction that the efforts undertaken to pinpoint “key improvements” for the town had been acknowledged in the Budget. The council has been conducting consultations regarding its proposals for Spennymoor since October of the previous year. This funding is designated for utilization over the forthcoming 10 years, with objectives including the revitalization of the high street, addressing anti-social behavior, enhancing transport infrastructure, and fostering economic growth. According to the council, £7 million has already been allocated to the town centre, encompassing the redevelopment of the former Festival Walk shopping centre site and a leisure centre. Updated guidance and fresh strategic objectives for the Long-term Plan for Towns fund are anticipated for imminent publication, intended to align the fund with the current government’s priorities. Nevertheless, the council stated that information from Whitehall suggested it would still acquire the pledged £20 million. Scott commented, “We look forward to finding out more details to allow us to plan our next steps.” Post navigation Lawmakers endorse abolition of hereditary peerages in House of Lords Policy and Resources Reverses Funding Decision for St James Cultural Centre
