A substantial financial investment is planned to enhance mental health assistance for expectant mothers and new parents in South Yorkshire who are experiencing difficulties. Doncaster Council’s allocation, amounting to approximately £300,000, will finance the recruitment of two specialized health visitors by the Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust. These newly established positions are designed to deliver expert perinatal mental health care, addressing the emotional and psychological well-being of both parents and their babies from the point of conception up to the infant’s first birthday. The initiative will be financed through a dedicated public health grant, ensuring that these supplementary expenses do not affect other services provided by the council. Additionally, a specialist community public health nurse will be appointed as part of this development, as reported by the Local Democracy Reporting Service. An estimated £50,000 is designated for strengthening an existing local program that organizes assistance for children and families requiring support from various service providers. The NHS indicates that one in ten women experience postnatal depression.
