Fuel released from an overturned tanker is thought to be responsible for the demise of a number of fish, the Environment Agency (EA) has indicated. A “significant” amount of fuel was discharged onto the A66, specifically near Threlkeld in Cumbria, situated between the A591 at Keswick and the A5091 (Troutbeck), during Saturday morning. The EA reported the discovery of 34 deceased fish in the adjacent Naddle Beck, attributing their deaths to the contamination. The agency further stated that the overall impact was “minimal” and that the subsequent clean-up efforts proved effective. National Highways confirmed that the road had been inaccessible for approximately two days to facilitate an “extensive repair and resurfacing operation.” Throughout the weekend, motorists experienced travel delays as traffic was rerouted away from the affected vicinity. The thoroughfare was reopened on Sunday evening after the completion of recovery and clean-up activities.
