Friends of a student who died in the Nottingham attacks have finished an ultramarathon, generating thousands of pounds to honor his memory. Barnaby Webber was one of three individuals who tragically lost their lives due to stab wounds inflicted by Valdo Calocane in the city during June 2023. This past Sunday, two of his acquaintances, Abi Brant and Freya Tyler, undertook a 33-mile (53km) run to commemorate him and collect funds for the Barnaby Webber Foundation, established by his relatives. Upon finishing the demanding endeavor, the 19-year-old participants expressed a conviction that Barnaby was “definitely” with them. The duo concluded the ultramarathon in a poignant moment, embracing friends and family members, some of whom had accompanied them for portions of the course during the day. Members of Mr. Webber’s cricket team were also participants, with runners sporting t-shirts adorned with the team’s colours – yellow and green – alongside his jersey number, 53. Ms. Brant remarked, “We just noticed things along the way that were yellow and green or the green and yellow leaves lining the streets.” She added, “He was definitely with us.” Furthermore, they were sent a supportive message from Barnaby’s parents, Emma and David Webber. Ms. Tyler commented, “That made us a bit emotional but it was really nice.” She further stated, “It was so special,” and concluded, “It felt like a dream.” As Sunday’s run concluded, the students had accumulated over £4,000 for The Barnaby Webber Foundation, an organization dedicated to aiding young individuals and fostering grassroots cricket. The foundation was established by his family following the deaths of Barnaby, fellow University of Nottingham student Grace O’Malley-Kumar, aged 19, and 65-year-old Ian Coates, all on 13 June 2023. Initially, Ms. Brant and Ms. Tyler had set a fundraising goal of £2,000; however, after rapidly exceeding this sum, they opted to increase their target to £5,353, referencing his shirt number.
