Freyr Alexandersson, an Icelandic coach previously associated with Cardiff City, has departed from the Belgian club Kortrijk. Alexandersson’s name was among those considered by Cardiff following manager Erol Bulut’s exit in September. At the time, Belgian media outlets indicated he had traveled to Wales for discussions. These reports were subsequently refuted, with Alexandersson asserting that his departure from Kortrijk “was not on the agenda”. In May of last year, Alexandersson had expressed that he would “love to coach Cardiff at some point,” having garnered acclaim for preventing Kortrijk’s relegation from the Belgian top flight. Nevertheless, he has now left Kortrijk – a club where Cardiff owner Vincent Tan holds the majority shareholder position – following a 3-0 home defeat against Dender, which placed them 14th in the 16-team Belgian Pro League. Earlier this month, Cardiff awarded manager Omer Riza a contract extending until the season’s conclusion, after he had served as interim boss for over two months.
