Predictions of freezing temperatures have led a council to guarantee short-term accommodation for rough sleepers during the cold spell. Reading Borough Council has initiated its Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP) in partnership with the homelessness charity St Mungo’s, confirming it will remain active until at least Monday. The authority stated that this response is activated when temperatures of 0C or below are forecasted for a minimum of three consecutive nights. This action occurs as many areas across the country have experienced their initial snowfall of winter. Councillor Matt Yeo, the lead for housing, stated: “We are acutely aware that those rough sleeping on our streets face more threat when the weather turns cold, as it has done this week, and I’m pleased to see SWEP is now in place to protect them.” He also encouraged the public to “Please do report anyone you see rough sleeping via StreetLink so we can ensure they are offered help.” The council receives assistance with the additional spaces required for the emergency protocol from the Salvation Army, YMCA Reading, and Launchpad Reading.
