Public wi-fi services, free of charge, are set to be introduced at bus stops throughout Nottingham. The city council has granted a 15-year contract to JCDecaux, commencing in January, for the refurbishment of Nottingham’s 800 bus shelters and its standalone digital totems. In addition to offering wi-fi, JCDecaux plans to utilize advertising income generated from the shelters and screens to implement LED lighting and real-time air quality monitoring systems. The Nottingham City Council stated that advertising funds will also be directed towards environmental and community endeavors. These initiatives encompass backing for community organizations, urban university research projects, and biodiversity efforts. Neghat Khan, the council leader, emphasized the significance of maintaining the city’s bus stops and shelters effectively, noting that the advertising revenue would generate additional funds for the council. According to a spokesperson for Nottingham City Council, the upgraded shelters will incur no expense for the council, and the project is anticipated to be completed within approximately 12 to 18 months. The council further indicated that JCDecaux will also bear the responsibility for the ongoing maintenance of the bus shelters.
