A complimentary service has been introduced to assist young individuals in discontinuing vaping, prompted by apprehensions regarding its unestablished long-term health consequences. Under this initiative, adolescents residing in Slough, Berkshire, will be offered free nicotine replacement therapy along with “judgement-free” guidance from trained professionals. Health and Wellbeing Slough developed this six to 12-week program on behalf of the local borough council. In the United Kingdom, it is unlawful to sell nicotine vaping products to anyone under the age of 18, and adults are also prohibited from purchasing them for minors. A representative for the council stated: “While vapes may seem like a safer alternative to smoking, they aren’t harmless – especially if you’ve never smoked before.” They further added, “No matter the reason you started vaping, because of peer pressure, curiosity or just thought it was ‘no big deal’, this is your chance to stop – and we’re here to support you every step of the way.” While vaping is not considered as detrimental as smoking conventional cigarettes, some medical experts have cautioned non-smokers against starting to vape, citing concerns that it could inflict lasting damage on their lungs, hearts, and brains. The council indicated its collaboration with local colleges and schools to publicize the scheme and its intention to conduct informational workshops. To access this confidential service, teenagers are advised to request a referral from their school nurse or send a text message with “QUIT Vape” to 66777. Earlier this month, the government announced a Tobacco and Vapes Bill, which proposes to prohibit vape advertising and sponsorship, and to impose restrictions on the flavours, packaging, and display of vapes and other nicotine products.
