To enhance safety, a school is providing free parking for parents. Individuals dropping off students at Whitefriars Academy Primary School, located in King’s Lynn, Norfolk, now have access to the council-owned Boal Quay car park. This measure follows issues of inadequate parking, traffic congestion, and “carnage” during school pick-up and drop-off periods, which created hazards for children walking and cycling nearby. The school, having implemented the scheme for the past month, is encouraging more parents to register. Head teacher Mat Tuckwood stated: “At drop-off and pick-up time it’s carnage.” He added, “It’s dangerous. The roads are really narrow so having this car park and being able to use it makes a massive difference. “I get it parents are always in a rush. However, this is an ideal solution because literally it is a two-minute walk. “We think it’s actually quicker to come here and park and then the children walk than it is to try and find a parking space near the school.” The concept of utilizing the council-owned location originated with Labour borough councillor Deborah Heneghan, who serves the St Margarets with St Nicholas ward. Heneghan reported receiving numerous complaints, noting: “Local residents couldn’t get out in the mornings to get to work; the congestion, the inconsiderate parking. “You know what it’s like. It’s chaotic at every school in the country. I mean, I’ve had children at primary school. I remember having that chaos. “Not every school is fortunate to have a council-run car park at the end of the road!” During the initial month of the initiative, the QR code parking system recorded usage by 54 distinct car registrations. Data from King’s Lynn and West Norfolk Borough Council indicated 159 uses during morning hours and 256 uses in the afternoon. The school, which accommodates 400 pupils, hopes that additional parents will opt to register for the QR code. This code grants users 30 minutes of complimentary parking in both the morning and afternoon, aiming to further enhance road safety during busy periods. Elsewhere in the town, parents associated with Greyfriars School can utilize free parking at The Walks car park. This public parking facility, situated adjacent to the football club, provides all visitors with three hours of free parking.
