Fraser Thornton is set to commence his role as Rangers chairman on Monday, following his appointment to the position. According to the club, Thornton “has held many senior leadership and board positions throughout his career, in both private and public companies”. Rangers further stated that “Having worked in the international drinks industry for the last 30 years, he offers a vast range of experience in stakeholder engagement; spanning political, commercial and public interest groups.” The club also noted, “He has extensive management experience across sales, brand marketing, strategy development and finance.” Thornton obtained his qualification as a chartered accountant with Price Waterhouse during the early 1990s, after which he worked internationally. A native of Glasgow, he served as a council member for the Scotch Whisky Association between 2006 and 2021. John Gilligan assumed the position of interim Rangers chairman in mid-September, following John Bennett’s resignation from the role due to health reasons. Regarding Thornton, Gilligan commented: “As a lifelong supporter and season ticket holder, he has a deep knowledge of the club, which together with a highly successful executive track record and an impressive range of non-executive experience makes him an excellent fit for this role.” He further stated, “We look forward to welcoming him and our CEO Patrick Stewart to their new roles on Monday.” Gilligan concluded by saying, “My time as interim chair of our club has been a wonderful and emotional experience. My sincere thanks goes to the board for their trust in me and for their support during this time.” In related news concerning the club’s athletic performance, Philippe Clement’s Rangers team is scheduled to compete against Celtic in the Scottish League Cup final on Sunday at 15:30 GMT, and currently holds third place in the Premiership. Additionally, Jo Potter’s Rangers side leads the SWPL standings and will play Glasgow City on Sunday at 12:10.
