A fire service has honored a former watch manager, characterizing him as a “true pillar” of the community. John Davies served as an on-call firefighter for 33 years with Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service in Oswestry, concluding his service in 2017. Oswestry Fire Station shared an emotional tribute on Facebook announcing Mr. Davies’ passing, which has garnered numerous comments. The tribute states, “He was the kind of man who always had your back, whether it was at a challenging incident or during a tough moment in life.” It continues, “His leadership as watch manager was second to none—fair, understanding and supportive, he brought out the best in everyone around him.” The tribute also noted, “John gave his all to the fire service, answering the call at all hours, in all conditions, to help those in need.” Mr. Davies, an engineer by profession, was employed at JCB in Wrexham, Stadco in Shrewsbury, and Jones of Oswestry throughout his career, concurrently serving as an on-call firefighter. The tribute further mentioned, “He didn’t just fight fires – he saved lives, protected homes and comforted families in their darkest hours.” It added, “John’s fingerprints are on every part of Oswestry Fire Station and his influence will be felt for generations.” Additionally, Mr. Davies organized Oswestry’s yearly bonfire and fireworks night and conducted weekly drill nights, during which firefighters honed their skills for emergency preparedness. A social media comment stated: “I learned a great deal from John, he was the first LF [leading firefighter] I served under in the fire service. He gave me an outstanding model to work from.” Another individual commented: “Devastated to hear this news today. John was a great mentor to me and many others that served with him.” The tribute extended condolences to Mr. Davies’ family, expressing gratitude for “sharing him” with the fire service. It concluded with the message: “Rest in peace John, you’ve done your duty and you’ve done it with honour. Thank you for everything – you will always be in our hearts.”
