Former Tottenham defender Sebastien Bassong has expressed agreement with manager Ange Postecoglou’s specific criticism of winger Timo Werner. This follows Werner’s substitution at half-time during Spurs’ 1-1 draw against Rangers on Thursday. Postecoglou had described Werner’s first-half display as “unacceptable” after the match. Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Bassong voiced his support for the Tottenham manager’s stance. Bassong stated, “I agree with him. I know we are in football and sometimes a manager is supposed to protect their players. But when you are a senior player you will be held accountable. Timo Werner can take it and it should trigger him to get better. When you are in that situation you cannot hide and have to take responsibility. That performance was not at the level it should be. Take responsibility, be accountable and move on.” Meanwhile, a segment of the Tottenham fanbase is reportedly growing dissatisfied with Postecoglou, following a series of inconsistent results in recent weeks. Bassong commented that the club “knew what they were getting” when they appointed the Australian coach, and he remains hopeful for his former team’s success. He elaborated, “When Tottenham took Ange Postecoglou they knew what they were getting. They were getting a man who has a DNA in the way he wants to play. Some people would say he is a bit stubborn but he knows what he is trying to do. He is trying to bring silverware into Tottenham. It has been difficult. You can’t blame injuries. They have to stick together and show resilience.” Post navigation England Rugby Player Honoured with Freedom of the Borough Scottish Premiership Weekend: Fan Reactions to Aberdeen’s Form and Rangers’ Victory
