Juan Mata, the former midfielder for Chelsea and Manchester United, who earned 41 caps representing Spain, has become a member of the ownership group for San Diego FC, an expansion team in Major League Soccer. The 36-year-old Mata transferred to the A-League club Western Sydney Wanderers in September. San Diego FC is scheduled to commence play in the MLS in 2025, becoming the league’s 30th franchise. Mata stated, “Joining San Diego FC as a partner is an exciting opportunity to help build something truly special in a city and league that are experiencing incredible growth.” According to San Diego FC, Mata holds the distinction of being the “first active international soccer player to hold an ownership stake in Major League Soccer.” During his 11-year tenure in the Premier League with Chelsea and Manchester United, Mata secured six major trophies, notably including the Champions League. He was also part of the Spain squad that triumphed in the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012, though he has not represented his national team since 2016. Sir Mohamed Mansour, chairman of San Diego FC, characterized Mata as a “serial winner” and expressed his belief that Mata’s values align with the club’s objective to “build a winning team for the long-term.”
