A life sentence for murder has been imposed on a former soldier who fatally stabbed an individual at the entrance of his residence. Stephen McGhee, aged 48, was informed that he must serve a minimum of 21 years in custody before being considered for parole, subsequent to the murder of Kevan Doyle in Wishaw, North Lanarkshire. A trial conducted at the High Court in Edinburgh last month resulted in his conviction for murder. Judge Lord Young characterized McGhee as “a man quick to violence,” noting his prior record of 10 assault convictions. McGhee had pleaded not guilty to the murder of Mr Doyle, asserting he did not strike him on the head and body with a weapon during the attack on 28 October 2022. Evidence presented to the court indicated that a screwdriver was apparently utilized in the assault. Lord Young stated to McGhee: “The speed and ferocity of the attack was plain to see on CCTV footage.” The judge mentioned that Mr Doyle, 43, had faced numerous challenges throughout his life, adding: “He was part of a close and loving family and they miss him very deeply.” The jury was informed that the two men had been acquainted for approximately 15 years. McGhee asserted that his intention was to assist his friend, and he had gone back to his residence to retrieve food and a spare phone for him. Upon his return to the property on Glencleland Road, he alleged that he was effectively ambushed by Mr Doyle, the victim’s cousin, and a woman. He further claimed he was forcibly pulled into the house and faced with a weapon. McGhee then fled the location, stating that he only comprehended the gravity of the situation when he subsequently observed police tape at the residence. He testified during the trial: “I could not believe what had happened had resulted in his death.” Defence counsel Tony Graham KC described the event as “a needless death,” adding: “He stands to spend a considerable time in custody for ending a human life.” Mr. Graham stated that “a considerable amount of alcohol” had been consumed on the day the attack occurred. Mr Graham further remarked: “It goes without saying that if Mr McGhee could relive that day he would never have returned to that house.” Copyright 2024 BBC. All rights reserved.
