A man who previously experienced homelessness and has now secured employment credits a charitable organization with assisting him in transforming his life. Roy Stubbs, who had been dealing with mental health challenges, began attending the Garden House respite center in Peterborough in April of the previous year. Following this, he commenced volunteering activities with Light Project Peterborough and Peterborough City Hospital, expressing a desire to “give back and build his confidence.” This week, Mr. Stubbs successfully obtained a position as a health and wellbeing lead at Boroughbury Medical Centre, located on Craig Street. He reflected that he “was a mess” upon his initial arrival and had not believed he could “get to where he is now.” Light Project Peterborough expressed that it was “proud” of Mr. Stubbs’ progress and “delighted” by his achievement. Jess Marsden, a nurse affiliated with Boroughbury Medical Centre, regularly visited the Garden House each week to provide appointments to individuals on the Health Outreach Bus. Ms. Marsden, who will serve as Mr. Stubbs’ manager, stated: “Roy has come a long way. He’s demonstrated that those who have lived experience can put it to good use. “We’re pleased to give him a job which will make a big difference to our patient’s lives.” Mr. Stubbs, who has participated in the Great Eastern Run on two occasions to support the charity, conveyed his gratitude for all the assistance he received. Before securing his current position, he successfully finished a six-month homeless health peer advocacy program. Through this program, he assisted guests at the Garden House with completing forms and accompanied them to appointments at doctor’s offices and job centers. He commented, “Being a peer advocate has done me the world of good. “It’s helped with my mental health and brought me out of my shell – It gave me the confidence to apply for a job.” He further stated: “The journey has been amazing. I wouldn’t have believed on my first day at the Garden House, that I’d be where I am now. “I’ve learnt a lot about life including self-care and wellbeing.” He has since recounted his experiences to the Peterborough Truth Commission, aiming to motivate others who have faced comparable situations.
