A police force has announced the dismissal of a former officer for transmitting offensive WhatsApp messages to fellow colleagues. Former PC Samuel Thacker, who served as a response officer in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, transmitted messages described as offensive, derogatory, and demeaning to male colleagues. A significant portion of these communications concerned female police officers. Staffordshire Police further stated that Mr. Thacker also sent messages containing discriminatory remarks regarding individuals with disabilities, as well as some that were derogatory towards more senior officers. The force added that an accelerated misconduct hearing determined his actions constituted gross misconduct. The hearing, which lasted one day, occurred on 28 November and was presided over by Chief Constable Chris Noble. The panel concluded that Mr. Thacker had violated the force’s standards concerning authority, respect and courtesy, equality and diversity, and discreditable conduct. Deputy Chief Constable Jon Roy commented: “Sexism and misogyny are not acceptable and we will continue to take robust action against any officer or member of staff that doesn’t act with the highest standards of authority, respect and courtesy.” He continued: “Every day hard-working police officers perform their duties with the utmost professionalism and I am sure they share my disgust at this kind of behaviour.” Mr. Thacker’s name will be added to the College of Policing’s barred list, which will prohibit him from employment within policing and other law enforcement organizations.
