Beth Winter, a former Labour Member of Parliament, has resigned from the party, alleging it is pursuing an “authoritarian political agenda”. Ms. Winter, who served as the representative for Cynon Valley between 2019 and 2024, stated that Labour’s present aim is to “retain the neoliberal status quo, serve corporate interests and protect the ruling class”. In 2023, Ms. Winter, known as a supporter of former UK Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, advocated for a review of selection processes subsequent to her unsuccessful bid for a new seat following boundary adjustments. The Labour Party chose not to provide a comment. In a statement, Ms. Winter asserted, “The Labour Party’s unprecedented persecution and ruthless treatment of its own socialist members, representatives and voters is disgraceful”. She indicated that her election was based on Labour’s 2019 manifesto and affirmed her continued commitment “to that manifesto’s vision for a fairer, more equal, and greener society ‘for the many, not the few’.” She further stated, “Sadly, the Labour Party no longer represents that socialist vision and I have, therefore, decided today to cease my membership.” She characterized the Labour Party’s budget from the previous week, which she now finds “unrecognisable”, as a “missed opportunity” that led to “continued austerity, inequality, poverty, and hardship for millions of people”. Additionally, she criticized the UK government for its failure to remove the two-child benefit cap and to abolish universal winter fuel payments. The Labour Party again chose not to comment.
