Cllr Philip Braat, 48, a former Lord Provost of Glasgow, has been apprehended and formally accused concerning alleged stalking offences. Mr. Braat, who has served as a representative for the Anderston/City/Yorkhill ward since 2007, is understood to have been suspended by Scottish Labour. He assumed the position of Lord Provost in 2020, holding the post at Glasgow City Council for two years. Previously, he served as the head of the Strathclyde Police Authority. Mr Braat’s arrest and charging took place on 23 October. He is anticipated to appear before Glasgow Sheriff Court at a later date. His tenure as deputy lord provost spanned from 2017 to 2020, before he transitioned to the role of lord provost, which he held until 2022. During this period, he represented Scotland’s biggest city at the Cop26 climate summit. As an honorary captain in the Royal Navy Reserves, he has declared his membership of the Law Society of Scotland in his register of interests. Among Mr Braat’s current responsibilities on the council is his service on the Safe Glasgow Partnership. Additionally, he was employed as a part-time parliamentary caseworker for Maureen Burke, the recently-elected Labour MP for Glasgow North East. His party is understood to have administratively suspended Mr Braat while awaiting the conclusion of any investigation. According to a spokesperson for the Labour Party: “The Labour Party takes all complaints seriously. They are fully investigated in line with our rules and procedures, and any appropriate action is taken.” A spokesperson for Police Scotland stated: “A 48-year-old man was arrested and charged on Wednesday, 23 October, 2024, in connection with stalking offences. A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal and he is expected to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court at a later date.” All rights reserved. Copyright 2024 BBC.
