A development proposal in a village, featuring 16 new residences and a spa, has received endorsement from a former England cricketer, citing potential advantages for the local cricket club. Devon Malcolm, who serves as president of Brixworth Cricket Club in Northamptonshire, stated that this project would facilitate access to new financial resources. The community holds differing views regarding the proposals for a site situated off Northampton Road, with the local parish council expressing opposition to the initiative. Should the plan gain approval, the freehold of the Brixworth Cricket and Tennis Club would be transferred to a community interest company, which would then assume complete management and ownership. The former fast bowler commented: “If we can’t secure a long-term lease, we can’t apply for funding from the England and Wales Cricket Board.” He continued, “If we do own the ground, the world would be our oyster.” He further emphasized that it was “massively important to see the club continue.” Malcolm’s playing career included representing Northamptonshire, Derbyshire, and Leicestershire at the county level, and he secured 128 Test wickets for England throughout the 1990s. Brixworth Cricket Club reported that it presently pays an annual rent of £1, but noted that the grounds have an approximate value of £500,000, making their purchase unaffordable for the club. The club indicated that if the proposed development, which also incorporates a takeaway establishment, proceeds, a covenant would be placed on the sports pitches to safeguard them from future construction. A consultation conducted for Ekeney Consultants, the developer, revealed backing for affordable housing units, yet some individuals voiced apprehensions regarding construction in rural areas and increased traffic. Brixworth Parish Council stated that there was “insufficient evidence to suggest it is anything but a speculative application.” West Northamptonshire Council is expected to render a decision on these plans by November.
