An individual, formerly a boxer, has been sentenced to prison for publishing racially aggravated remarks online amidst widespread unrest and rioting that occurred during the summer months. Derek Heggie produced two YouTube videos, described as “ill-informed and potentially dangerous,” between August 2 and August 8, according to proceedings at Carlisle Crown Court. The 41-year-old, residing on Welsh Road in Harraby, Carlisle, confessed earlier this month to transmitting communications deemed offensive. Sentencing him to 10 months and two weeks in prison, Judge Nicholas Barker stated that Heggie’s intention for his offensive remarks concerning the Muslim faith was clearly “to be read and heard by many.” Nationwide unrest was sparked by the killings of three children in Southport on July 29. Heggie, who identified himself as an actor and podcast host, was among multiple individuals in north and west Cumbria who faced prosecution for disseminating inflammatory material online. Prosecutor Tim Evans indicated that the posts were “in whole or in part of an offensive nature.” He further noted that one of Heggie’s videos had garnered nearly 500,000 views and possessed the potential to be shared with individuals who were not subscribers. The court was informed that the defendant possessed a record of 32 prior convictions, which included an assault on a police officer and a racially aggravated public order offense. Tariq Khawam, representing the defense, stated: “He knows what he did was wrong, ill-informed and potentially dangerous.” Speaking directly to Heggie, Judge Barker remarked: “What was clear in your mind was that these statements were to have a broad reach and to be read and heard by many.” “You did this at a time of great unrest and concern. “It is clear the messages were intended to be grossly offensive, particularly to those of a Muslim faith,” the judge further commented.
