An individual who previously worked as a BBC journalist has received an eight-year prison sentence for multiple child sexual abuse offenses. Duncan Bartlett, aged 52, was imprisoned at Wood Green Crown Court, located in north London, following his admission of making payments to view live streams depicting the sexual exploitation of children. He had entered a guilty plea to 35 charges during a prior court session held on 30 August. According to the Metropolitan Police, investigators confiscated electronic devices belonging to Bartlett and discovered almost 6,000 indecent images of children. Furthermore, evidence was uncovered indicating he had made payments to individuals in the Philippines who would organize live video recordings of children being sexually exploited for Bartlett’s viewing. Bartlett, whose tenure as a BBC journalist spanned 14 years until 2015, was apprehended in September 2021. His career included serving as a correspondent in Tokyo and hosting “World Business Report” on the BBC World Service. Bartlett, a resident of central London, maintained his employment as a researcher and China expert at London’s SOAS university until a period following his guilty plea. It appears he did not inform his employer about his criminal activities, and the university remained unaware of the case’s specifics until the current day. A spokesperson for SOAS verified that Bartlett held positions as a research associate and contractor at the London university’s China Institute during the period from 1 January 2021 to 30 September 2024. She stated: “Although not a permanent member of staff or in a student-facing role, he was paid as a contractor to produce a series of podcasts about China, producing his last edition in September 2024.” She added: “Neither SOAS nor the SOAS China Institute were aware of any legal proceedings before we were contacted by the media about this case today.”
