A disused school building, previously damaged by fire and labeled a “blight” by the community, is slated to reopen as an educational institution. Local residents had previously raised concerns that the former Bluebell Meadow Primary School premises, located in Trimdon Grange, County Durham, had transformed into a hub for anti-social behavior and frequent vandalism. In September, firefighters responded to a fire at the location, following worries regarding unauthorized access by young individuals. Durham County Council confirmed that the site is undergoing redevelopment, a decision made after receiving requests for its cleanup. The property, formerly identified as Trimdon Grange Infant School, has remained vacant since 2021, when a decline in student enrollment led to the merger of three local schools. Prior to sustaining damage, the premises served as a filming location for a segment of the ITV crime drama Vera. James Rowlandson, a Conservative and cabinet member for resources, investment and assets, stated that the school “will continue to be used as an educational facility”. He added, “The sale has been concluded and contractors are on site bringing the school up to date and back into use.” Lucy Hovvels, the Labour and Co-operative ward councillor for Trimdon and Thornley, highlighted that the site had deteriorated into a local eyesore. She stated: “Many of residents who live close by have endured week after week of fires being set alight, anti-social behaviour, criminal damage, fear, vandalism, and crime.” She further remarked: “It is unkept with boarded-up windows and overgrown weeds and it is a blight on the environment, which impacts residents and also other properties nearby.” The council, operating as an alliance, reported that it expended £22,000 on a security firm to patrol the premises after the fire, as per the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
