The formal opening of an inquest has occurred concerning the death of a shop owner who perished in a significant fire. Ben Taylor, aged 45, lost his life in the conflagration that devastated structures on Main Street in Kirkby Lonsdale, Cumbria, his place of residence, around 05:45 GMT on December 8. At Cockermouth Coroners’ Court, it was stated that Mr. Taylor, who was born in Lancaster, died during a “significant fire,” though the medical cause of his death is still “unascertained.” Kirsty Gomersal, the acting senior coroner for Cumbria, stated that “given the circumstances” surrounding Mr. Taylor’s death, an inquest was necessary. She formally postponed the proceedings until May to allow for additional investigations. Emergency services initiated a substantial multi-agency response following calls regarding the fire, which affected a block of apartments situated across from the Red Dragon pub. Ms. Gomersal remarked, “The circumstances of Mr Taylor’s tragic death are well-publicised.” “Mr Taylor was removed from his flat by Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service and placed outside.” Paramedics subsequently confirmed Mr. Taylor’s death at 06:30 GMT. Ms. Gomersal further stated, “A post-mortem examination has been carried out.” She added, “At present the medical cause of Mr Taylor’s death remains unascertained pending further pathological inquiries.” Concluding, she affirmed, “Given the circumstances of Mr Taylor’s death, I am satisfied that an inquest is required.” A police constable had received a statement after Mr. Taylor was identified to the officer by his cousin. A memorial service to commemorate Mr. Taylor’s life is scheduled for December 30 at Beetham Hall Crematorium, located near Milnthorpe. Following the establishment of the Kirkby Lonsdale Fire Disaster Fund, tens of thousands of pounds have been collected to assist individuals and families impacted by the fire.
