A football club has honored its goalkeeper, James Hitchcock, who passed away after an alleged assault during an evening out in York. Mr. Hitchcock, a married father-of-one from Cottingham in East Yorkshire, succumbed to his injuries in hospital on Wednesday afternoon. This occurred after an incident at the city’s railway station on Sunday. Mr. Hitchcock was a player for Barton Town FC. Chairman Mark Gregory expressed that the club was “devastated,” further describing Mr. Hitchcock as a “popular but quiet” member of the first team. Mckenzie Dicicco, 22, residing at Belgravia Gardens, Middlesbrough, faced charges of murder and affray at York Magistrates’ Court. He was ordered to remain in custody and is scheduled to appear at Leeds Crown Court on Friday. Mr. Dicicco did not submit a plea during this court session. British Transport Police reported that officers were summoned to the station around 20:45 GMT on Sunday after the victim, who was in his 30s, sustained severe head injuries. In his leading remarks, Mr. Gregory stated that Mr. Hitchcock had joined the semi-professional club, which competes in the Northern Counties East League, from Bridlington Town at the commencement of the season. He commented: “The news of James’s death has been hard to take in. It’s horrible. James was a popular member of the club. We are all devastated. We are a very close-knit club.” Mr. Gregory characterized Mr. Hitchcock as a “very good goalkeeper.” He also mentioned that he had personally reached out to players and staff on Wednesday evening to notify them of Mr. Hitchcock’s passing. Anthony Bowsley, who is the club’s first team manager, had played alongside Mr. Hitchcock at Bridlington Town. He remarked: “James was a lovely kid. Just a genuine, all round good guy. He is irreplaceable both as a friend and a player.” Mr. Gregory further announced that all Barton Town FC games scheduled for this weekend have been called off as a gesture of respect. He conveyed: “On behalf of the club, I would like to extend my condolences to James’s family and friends.”
