Volunteers at food banks report a one-third rise in distributed food parcels over the past year. Sustain foodbank, an initiative of Tonbridge Baptist Church, states it serves as the primary food provider for over 90 families weekly. The church, located on the Trench housing estate, has seen its food parcel distribution climb from 3,000 to nearly 4,000 between 2023 and 2024. A spokesperson for the Government commented, “The mass dependence on foodbanks is unacceptable.” Emma Lander, the manager, stated, “We often get offered toys as donations at Christmas but actually we’re just interested in getting people fed.” In addition to tinned and packaged contributions, the foodbank obtains fresh food, bread, and meat through supermarket donations. Its special festive parcels, distributed during the week preceding Christmas, additionally include a £20 supermarket voucher and a box of chocolates. The foodbank indicates that over one-third of children in the local community experience food poverty, meaning they miss at least one meal per day. Tara, a mother of three, informed BBC South East that many families would go hungry without the foodbank’s support. She stated, “‘I’m a single mum and I manage to make quite a few meals out of it, so it encourages the kids to at a bit healthier,” she said.” These parcels typically sustain most families for three to four days. Beyond providing food, Sustain also extends advice and a chance for conversation. User Sarah commented, “It feels like home every time I come in here.” Neil Durling, the church’s minister, who grew up on the Trench estate, recounted, “A single father came in and we gave him a donated supermarket turkey. “He cried because all he had to give his children on Christmas day was bacon sandwiches.” Data from the Trussell Trust indicates that over 1.4 million emergency food parcels were distributed to individuals facing hardship from 1 April to 30 September 2024. This figure represents a 69% increase compared to the corresponding period five years prior. The anti-poverty charity also reports a record 9.3 million people in the UK, including one in five children, are currently experiencing hunger and hardship. The government announced its plans to extend the Household Support Fund, raise the National Living Wage, and enhance benefits.
