An individual faces charges for allegedly threatening a health insurance company. The accusation stems from her repeating phrases that were found engraved on bullet casings at the site where UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was murdered. Briana Boston, aged 42, is alleged to have uttered the words “Delay, deny, depose, you people are next” during a recorded phone conversation with a representative from Blue Cross Blue Shield regarding a medical claim that had been denied. Ms. Boston, a Florida resident, has been charged with making threats to carry out a mass shooting or an act of terrorism. A judge established her bond at $100,000 (£78,900). Subsequent to the phone call on Tuesday with the US healthcare company, local news outlets indicated that detectives from Lakeland, Florida, arrived at Ms. Boston’s residence and took her into custody. Neither the Lakeland Police Department nor Ms. Boston’s attorney, Jim Headley, provided responses to inquiries for comment. Ms. Boston reportedly informed law enforcement that “healthcare companies played games and deserved karma from the world because they are evil.” She also stated that she employed the phrases associated with Mr. Thompson’s killer “because it’s what is in the news right now.” Law enforcement officials indicated that shell casings discovered at the Manhattan crime scene bore engravings of “deny,” “defend,” and “depose.” These terms bear a resemblance to the title of a 2010 publication: “Delay, Deny, Defend: Why Insurance Companies Don’t Pay Claims and What You Can Do About It.” Luigi Mangione, 26, stands accused of Mr. Thompson’s murder. His arrest occurred in Pennsylvania on Monday, on gun charges, concluding a multi-state manhunt that had spanned several days and appeared to yield limited leads. This case has generated expressions of support for Mr. Mangione and criticism directed at the United States’ for-profit health insurance sector, given that some policyholders have encountered substantial expenses and rejected claims. Furthermore, law enforcement authorities have issued warnings regarding the possibility of copycat incidents. The New York Police Department has reported that certain healthcare executives have been identified on an online “hit list” linked to Mr. Thompson’s murder. Officials reportedly asserted that Ms. Boston had leveraged “the UnitedHealthcare CEO’s homicide to her advantage” in order to issue a threat against the insurance firm. Lakeland Police Chief Sam Taylor was quoted by local media as stating, “She’s been in this world long enough that she certainly should know better… You can’t make threats like that in the current environment that we live in and think that we’re not going to follow up and put you in jail.” During her court appearance, Mr. Headley implored the judge to grant her release as the case progresses, contending that his client is a 42-year-old married mother of three who has “never had any criminal charges or convictions.” The judge established her bail at $100,000, referencing “the status of our country at this point.” Ms. Boston reportedly gasped upon hearing the judge’s ruling.
