Firefighters will undertake the Surrey Three Peaks Challenge on Wednesday, covering a 22-mile (36km) round trip while wearing their complete gear, all in support of a charitable cause. Recruits from the Surrey Fire & Rescue Service (SFRS) are set to perform this demanding feat to generate contributions for The Fire Fighters Charity. Their trek involves traversing Box Hill, Holmbury Hill, and Leith Hill, accumulating an ascent of 1,060m (3,477 ft). On their JustGiving page, they stated their objective as “to support the vital services that the charity provides to firefighters and their families in need”. The Fire Fighters Charity delivers physical, mental, and social wellbeing assistance to current and former staff members and their relatives. The team further noted, “By participating in the walk, they aim to raise awareness and funds to ensure that these essential services continue to thrive.” The participants have already collected £4,780, which is almost double their initial target of £2,500. This sum contributes to the £107,618 that SFRS has previously accumulated for the charity during the period of 2023 to 2024. This overall amount ranks as the sixth highest among all fire services nationwide and was generated through activities such as sponsored walks, car washes, and open days. Over half of this total, specifically £56,999, originated from community fundraising initiatives, marking an increase from £38,000 in the preceding year, while an additional £26,700 came from salary contributions.
