Following an assault on a firefighter, there have been demands for a “zero tolerance” approach to violence targeting emergency services personnel. The 2023-24 safety and wellbeing report from Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service indicated that an “act of violence against a firefighter” occurred this year. In contrast, last year’s report documented three such incidents. Buckinghamshire Council member Gary Hall commented: “I think it is imperative that the authority and the service are seen to take a very robust line of zero tolerance against offenders.” According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the report specified that the assault targeted an operational member of staff and was reported to Thames Valley Police. It stated: “This event was a result of a member of the public throwing a blow to the face towards an operational member of staff where they made contact with the helmet visor which protected the individual’s face.” During a meeting of the Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes Fire Authority, Mr Hall requested an update on the assault be provided at the subsequent meeting. He asserted: “I really do think that we should be seeking the severest penalty possible under prosecution and under the law.” Calum Bell, the health and safety manager responsible for preparing the report, stated he would ascertain if charges had been filed concerning the attack.
