The Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service has issued a caution regarding potential fire risks in homes during the festive season, highlighting items such as fairy lights and tinsel as possible additional hazards. The service aims to ensure household safety this Christmas and has detailed straightforward preventative measures. Lead firefighter Richard Little noted that the introduction of more flammable items into homes, including Christmas trees and wrapping paper, contributes to increased risks. He encouraged the public to utilize an available online tool designed to evaluate home fire safety and to understand how to mitigate these elevated dangers. The online fire safety assessment tool, which was introduced in May, queries users about different areas within a property, offers guidance, and alerts the fire service if a physical inspection of a home is deemed necessary. Mr. Little explained that beyond the increased use of candles, additional cooking, and more occupants in homes during this period, there are also more “methods” for fires to ignite. He cited a surge in the use of electrical devices and fairy lights, which could potentially overload sockets. He further stated that these combined factors elevate the likelihood of a fire occurring, which “could be devastating for a household.” The service additionally reiterated the critical advice for fire emergencies: “get out, stay out and call 999.” Furthermore, it urged individuals to volunteer to check the smoke alarms of vulnerable nearby residents, such as elderly relatives or neighbours, who might require assistance.
