A celebratory tea gathering held in Jersey served to unite various community groups and offer support to individuals potentially experiencing loneliness during the Christmas period. The initiative specifically sought to link older residents with younger families, particularly those who might lack older family members residing on the island. The event was orchestrated by Connect Me, a government initiative dedicated to enhancing public wellbeing through engagement in culture, arts, and physical activities. This gathering welcomed all members of the public, providing attendees with food and beverages, accompanied by musical entertainment. Carol Adhair, who has only one remaining family member in Jersey, received an invitation to the tea. There, she encountered Jess McGovern, and the two connected through common interests. Ms. Adhair expressed her positive view, stating, “I think this is great” and describing it as “so inspiring and I’m so glad I came.” She further commented, “I think it’s really important to help everybody really from birth to death.” Ms. McGovern remarked, “The tea was for people like Carol to come along to connect with others but also to share her wisdom because you can tell she’s a very wise lady so a lot of people have benefited from her coming.” Jen Neill and Jo Goodhall, both affiliated with Connect Me, contributed to the organization of the event and supervised its execution on the day. Ms. Neill stated, “We’re hoping that we can create some bonds, share some experiences and then people will continue to meet up after this.” Ms. Goodhall further commented, “It is giving people an opportunity to come and to get together and if we don’t provide the opportunity for people to mix, it won’t happen.” The complimentary event, held at Les Squez Jersey Youth Centre, saw dozens of individuals register their attendance.
