A night bus service designed to enhance community safety in North Devon is scheduled to recommence for the festive period. Devon and Cornwall Police indicated that, following the successful operation of a summer weekend night bus service, law enforcement personnel are working to protect individuals celebrating during the lead-up to Christmas. Police confirmed that the Stagecoach night bus would operate on four consecutive Saturday nights, from November 30 to December 21, serving Barnstaple, Bideford, and Ilfracombe. The police force stated that the night bus is expected to “help reduce drink and drug related incidents, anti-social behaviour and violence against women and girls”. Tickets for these services are priced at £2 for a single journey, which Insp Andy Wills, who oversees the Barnstaple sector, characterized as a “cost effective and convenient way to get home”. Insp Wills commented, “Alcohol and drugs affect a person’s ability to accurately judge a situation, which can get them into trouble. Some people may be tempted to drive home after drinking but it’s not worth the risk.” He further added, “The previous night bus services have demonstrated that it helps to reduce anti-social behaviour, as well as other offences.“We would urge anyone who wants to enjoy a festive night out to use this fantastic bus service and also remind people to look out for their friends to make sure everyone has a merry Christmas and a happy and healthy new year.” Insp Wills also mentioned that officers are conducting patrols to ensure public safety and sought to reassure the North Devon community that the police are present to address criminal activity and listen to any concerns they may have. Alison Hernandez, the Police and Crime Commissioner for Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, emphasized that everyone should be able to return home safely, whether they are “coming home from work or a night out”. She concluded, “We’re committed to ensuring that North Devon is a safe place to enjoy an evening out and I hope people take full advantage of this service throughout the festive season.” For additional information, follow BBC Devon on X, Facebook, and Instagram.
