An annual Christmas gathering for individuals experiencing isolation in Brighton and Hove is described as “like a comfort blanket” for those who might otherwise spend the holiday season alone. Approximately 160 guests were welcomed at The Grand hotel for a day characterized by “warmth, community and celebration,” according to organisers. Together Co, a charity dedicated to addressing loneliness and operating befriending services within the city, reported that attendees partook in a two-course meal and enjoyed performances featuring singing and magic. Hilary Howard, a participant at the gathering, stated that the charity was “always there for you.” She remarked, “It’s like a comfort blanket.” Howard added, “Coming to Brighton was my dream, and Together Co was the icing on the cake for me.” She described the occasion as “spectacular.” Separately, Terry Sadler expressed that he was “very lucky to be a part of it.” He conveyed to BBC Radio Sussex, “I have two grandchildren in Kent and my daughter is in Jersey, so I am lonely.” Among the attendees at the gathering, named Winter Warmer, were TV presenter Gail Porter and Mayor of Brighton and Hove Mohammed Asaduzzaman. The Brighton Welsh Male Voice Choir and singer Karen Etherington entertained the guests, alongside magician Greg Williamson. April Baker, chief executive of Together Co, stated the purpose of the event was to demonstrate to lonely people that they were valued, especially during a time of year that is often a period of heightened isolation for numerous individuals. However, Ms Baker emphasized that the gathering transcended mere meals or entertainment. “The Winter Warmer exemplifies Brighton and Hove’s community spirit, bringing together the people we support, volunteers, and the business community, to make a lasting impact,” she said. “The event is not only a memorable celebration but also fosters new friendships and strengthens the city’s social fabric.” Additionally, seasonal gift baskets were distributed to housebound individuals in the week preceding the main gathering.
